Although I was only there for a short time, the Festival of Flight was a big success with what looked like a great turn out in the thousands. At the entrance you were given The Great Park Festival of Flight paper bag filled with 3 brochures, a small foam airplane and a map. There was lots to see and do for the whole family, especially kids. There was a large craft tent set up and kids and adults were making origami, mosaics and kites to fly on the grass lawn in front of the temporary visitors center. Kids could be seen running around the lawn with kites in tow and tossing free Great Park frisbees. In the background the Balloon was busy taking riders into the sky during the entire event. Refreshments could be purchased by local vendors including Zov’s and Panera. The aircraft hangar housed tables and chairs for eating. Music could be heard through out the grounds from a large stage set up at the far end of the old runway. Both sides of the runway also had many booths featuring exhibits by the Orange County Fire Authority, Irvine Police, and The Great Park Conservancy. Visitors were also treated to radio controlled aircraft flybys and and a vintage airplane fly over.
Down the street from the Festival of Flight was Lennar’s Great Park Neighborhood Preview celebration. They had an new hangar built (Hangar 10) which showcased large images of their housing plans as well as tables for eating. The event was impressive. All food and drinks were free. When you signed up to receive info about Lennar’s Great Park Neighborhood they gave you a tote bag filled with a frisbee, USB drive, and a bike shaped keychain.
