Architecture: The Conservatory Bridge

One of the most spectacular planned areas of the Great Park is The Conservatory Bridge housing the Botanical Garden. Using a map in the Master Plan Summary Report, we have determined the Bridge to be approximately 10 football fields long or about 3600 feet long. According to the report, the bridge’s structure will be made of steel tubes and the top and sides sheathed in perforated metal. A continuous grid of large holes in the metal sheathing will allow sunlight and air to filter in. Another interesting aspect of the bridge is that each end of the span is partially buried under a small hill of earth (see photo below). It’s literally surrounding itself with nature inside and out. The bridge will span a massive man-made canyon featuring a waterway, waterfall and panoramic views of the Lake, Garden, Park, and surrounding landscape. The Conservatory Bridge also serves as the Botanic Garden’s Visitor Center, with spaces for permanent and temporary exhibits, a gift shop, and other features including a potential Butterfly Pavilion.

What’s your favorite area in the Great Park plan? Please tell us in the comments section below.
